MINUTES OF COMMITTEE MEETING
Chiang Mai Sub-Branch
Wednesday, 18th Of January 2017
2Gether Bar and Restaurant, Chiang Mai , Thailand
1807 – 1855 Hours

Committee Members present: Trevor Dobson, Gill Dobson, Barry Constantine , John Burnett, Richard Prouse, Roger Lindley and Victor Hayes

Reports and Discussions:

Chairman Trevor opened the meeting and thanked all for attending the committee and shared information related to the main branch in Chonburi.

Trevor reflected on the major reasons for our sub-branch to exist are the providing of social welfare to past and present service members and the sponsoring of Remembrance Day and the Poppy Appeal.

Trevor and John covered the invitation from British Embassy and Consulate which recognized the efforts of Royal British Legion in providing welfare assistance.

Trevor reported on the future departure of Richard Prouse as Remembrance and Poppy Appeal leader and of Roger Lindley as Secretary. Trevor believes in replacing of Richard the two areas should be split with one person leading Remembrance Day and another leading the Poppy Appeal.

Trevor asked Victor to please have written announcement of need for members to fill the Secretary, Remembrance Day and Poppy Appeal job responsibilities.

John reported there were no active social welfare cases.

John raised question of desirability of having an occasional social event during daylight hours as some members have difficulties with night transportation. Discussion about several alternatives such as CEC Breakfast Club, Sausage King or Poppa Rock.

Discussion of membership and payment of membership dues. John estimated sub-branch membership is at approximately twenty-five members. The change in payment of membership dues on-line still presents a problem for some and also affects ability of sub-branch having as timely membership count.

Discussion about good turnout at Remembrance Day in spite of the rainy weather and
soggy conditions at the cemetery. Expression of appreciation for the British Embassy
continuing financial support of the event and for Kawila Barracks providing bugler for the
event. Also, discussion of Poppy Appeal revenues from fifteen different collection
points. The collection were down this year due to the death of King Rama IX coinciding
with the appeal. About 19,000 Baht was raised in the appeal.

Associated with Remembrance Day, Trevor noted the positive feedback from the
members of the Chiang Mai Veterans of Foreign War (VFW) who attended the event.
Trevor will explore with them having another joint social type event.

Victor observed there are about fifteen to eighteen in attendance at regular social
events which is a good number considering size of the sub-branch.

Victor asked owner of 2Gether Bar about willingness to let sub-branch display plaques
and pictures if minimized attachment to walls. Owner is willing to let items be displayed
mounted on a detachable mounting board.

Gill Dobson reported the sub-branch had paid 1,500 Baht for another six months as
social sponsors in the Chiang Mai Expats Club. Balance in the sub-branch general fund
was 5,768 Baht.

Discussion about raising funds for the sub-branch. Motion by Barry: Request a
contribution of minimum twenty Baht per person per meeting. Motion seconded by John.

Motion passed with unanimous approval.

The committee meeting ended at 1855 hours.

2Gether Bar and Restaurant, Chiang Mai , Thailand
1900 – 2000 Hours

Committee Members present: Trevor Dobson, John Burnett, Richard Prouse and Victor Hayes
Reports and Discussions:
The social coordinator, Sally Ward, presented to the Committee her suggestions for fundraising and social events for our sub-chapter.
Wednesday, 9th of March a social event at The Red Lion for a meal with choices of fish and chips, steak and Guinnis pie & chips or vegetable Pad Thai. Wednesday, 18th of May at the Holiday Inn with an International buffet at a cost of 400 Baht per person. The first lottery draw for prizes of 5000/3000/2000 Baht prizes. Extended Happy Hour to 9 pm. If choose to bring own wine a corkage fee of 200 Baht. Suggested should invite the local Veterans of Foreign War (VFW) to event.
In July for the Queen’s Birthday a river cruise with a maximum sign-up of either 25 or 45 depending on number of bookings.
Saturday, 26th of November the City Life Garden Party at JJ Market.
December, the final lottery draw and annual Christmas Dinner for sub-chapter.
Sally is inquiring on local production of ceramic pottery poppy broaches and “in- the-ground” poppy to be used for fund raising for sub-branch.
The Committee had following discussions:
Chairman Trevor Dobson asked for thoughts on an “Old Geezer Tin Man” event starting at Center of The Universe which might have a 100 meter swim, 10 km bicycle ride and a 5 km walk. As with the walk last year, participants would have sponsors for their participation.

Membership Chairman John Burnett reported on impact of on-line membership renewal. Hopefully a report will be received detailing sub-branch membership. In addition, the 200 Baht that has traditionally been held per member at sub-branch on membership renewal is now not available. It was suggested it might be appropriate to have a communication to members asking for a voluntary donation of 200 Baht per member to the sub-branch General Fund.
Chairman Trevor suggested there might be other opportunities for raising awareness of The Royal British Legion such as: The Queen’s 90th birthday in July. Battle of Britain Day; Battle of Jutland Day; and other nationality major event days.
Treasurer report of Sub-branch General Fund Balance of 8,027 Baht.

Chairman Trevor told of Kanchanaburi’s interest if coming to visit the Chiang Mai sub-branch for a social sometime in the current year.

Victor Hayes announced that Sunday, the 14th of February would be the “Big 60” event for him.

The committee meeting ended at 2000 hours.
