December  2011/January 2012

Dear Gold Card Member,

with another year at an end, we would like to invite all Gold Card Members who are in town to join us for our New Years Eve Party!

Things get started around 8pm with our New Years Eve Buffet. This will include such delicacies as:-

Lancashire Ham,

Bacon Quiche,

Duck Pate on toast,

Prawn Caesar Salad,

Chicken Wings in BBQ Sauce,

Fish Gujons,

Sausages on sticks,

Cheese & Pineapple on sticks

and more!

The price of 200 baht (180 baht if you use your Gold Card) also includes a glass of Bubbly at Midnight.

During the evening we’ll be showing the Premiership football matches between Man Utd and Blackburn which kicks off at 7.45pm, and then the Arsenal v QPR and Chelsea v Aston Villa matches which both kick off at 10pm. (the Chelsea v Villa game will be shown without sound)

As the Big Moment approaches, we will gather for the countdown to 2012, the Chimes of Big Ben, Auld Lang Syne and Fireworks, followed by traditional Scottish music. At around  12.30 am on New Year’s Day, we take the music up tempo and there will be a party and dancing until the wee hours (subject to Plod’s approval of course, but the local constabulary have indicated that the usual time restrictions won’t apply tonight as they’ll all be out on the razz as well)

Sunday 1st January 2012 If New Years Eve is not your thing, maybe you’d like to join us for Sunday Lunch on New Year’s Day?  We’ve got our usual offerings of Roast Lamb, Roast Beef, Roast Pork or Roast Turkey, for those of you who still haven’t had enough! These are served with Roast Potatoes, Yorkshire Puddings, Seasonal Veg and gravy.

In the evening, there’s more premiership football with West Brom v Everton at 7.30pm and Sunderland v Man city at 10pm.

Monday 2nd January Monday is traditionally a night when we play music from around the world and around the corner. tonight it’s Schlager Night, so if you enjoy tapping your toes to the  old tunes of Germany and Holland, do come along!  We’ve got our German Sausage Selection along with mashed potato and Sauerkraut on special offer at 170 baht, and our Dutch Snack selection (Bitterballen, Korkets and Frikandel) served with bread and chopped onion also for 170 baht.   There’s more Premiership footy as Wolves take on Chelsea at 10pm and Aston Villa entertain Swansea at the same time

Every Tuesday is of course Quiz Night and as we go into the New Year, a few questions will be looking back and testing your knowledge of some of the major events of 2011. Why not make up a team and come along. Entry is free and there’s over 1,800 baht in prizes on offer.

Wednesday 4th January this is the first British Legion Social of the New Year and as many of you will have had a heavy meat diet over Christmas, we’ve got Fish ‘n Chips served the traditional way in newspaper (lined with Grease-proof paper for hygiene reasons!!) This is on  offer at just 140 baht (normally 230 baht). We’ve also got Fish fingers and chips for just 70 baht, served the same way. There are also pickled eggs on sale at 25 baht each, for those of you who want to complete the British Fish and Chip Shop experience!

During January there are a few noteworthy events to tell you about. We’ll try to send another newsletter out during the month, but these are worth putting in your diary.

World Cheese Day: Friday 20th January

We felt we couldn’t let this day go without marking it in some way, given that cheeseboards are one of our specialities! This year we’ll have our full range, plus a few guest cheeses available. There’ll be FREE crackers, toast, Tomato Chutney, Cucumber Chutney, Pickled onions and Beetroot.  The cost is 200 baht and  for that we’ll also throw in a 175ml glass of wine, a ½ pint of Olde English Cider or a half pint of Guinness!

National Pie Day. Monday 23rd January

This is a marketing gimmick by the American Pie Council (yes there really is one!) but it seemed like a good excuse to promote our range of pies. so we’re offering any of our pies at half price for the day. So you can get a Steak and Kidney Pie, Chicken & Mushroom Pie, Vegetable Pie or Aussie Meat Pie, only 115 Baht If you participate in this promotion, we’ll throw in your first pint of Guinness for an unrepeatable 150 baht! or a half pint of Olde English cider for 90 baht!

Australia Day: Thursday 26th January

Thanks to Olde Bell regular Bill, we have a full sized, Aussie Flag hand stitched in Vietnam  draped over our balcony as we celebrate Australia’s National Day. how else could we celebrate such an event but with one of our famous BBQ’s. So whether you’re a fair dinkum Aussie, a True Brit or Irishman  or even a Kiwi or a Seppo,  you’re most welcome to join in the fun!  The Barbie will start around 7pm. The cost: 120 baht gets you all you can eat!! Cooper’s Aussie Pale Ale will be on promotion at 150 baht but stocks are strictly limited so its first come, first served!

We hope there is something here  to persuade you to join us sometime over the next week, but if you are elsewhere, Beer , Billy, the staff and I would like to wish you all a peaceful and prosperous New Year in 2012.

December 2011

Dear Gold Card Members,
If you’re on your way to Chiang Mai for Christmas or the New Year we look forward to seeing you. There’s still some availability on the planes and despite the effects of the Ratchaphreuk Flower show which has (as it did in 2006) sucked in hordes of domestic tourists, the sheer number of hotels in Chiang Mai has ensured that there are still plenty of decent options on the accommodation front, so if you’re still contemplating freezing in UK or boiling in Oz, why not hop on a plane and join us in the benign sunshine of the Land of Smiles?

As we build up for the Festive Season, there are a few things we’d like to update you on:

Christmas Dinner. Tickets for Christmas Day at midday are now sold out: We could accommodate a few outside but it can get quite warm there in the afternoon even in December! We still have some availability for Christmas Day at 7pm as well as for Christmas Eve. If you haven’t got your tickets yet, do pop in soon. Even if you are not joining us for Christmas Dinner, do feel free to pop in for a pint and say hello to us at anytime during Christmas Day!
Boxing Day Cold Cuts Buffet The tickets for the Cold Cuts Buffet on Monday 26th December are now available behind the bar.  We will be offering Cold Turkey, Ham, Roast Beef, Assorted Continental Meats, a couple of excellent examples of Pate, a range of British, Australian & Continental Cheeses; Pickles and Chutney’s, as well as a range of Salads and Breads. All in all, a Vegetarians nightmare!
This all starts at 7pm and tickets cost 390 baht (you can use your Gold Card to reduce this to 350 baht). There’s a good programme of Premiership football for you to enjoy as you munch your way through our fayre! Starting with the Sloane Rangers derby at 7pm with Chelsea taking on Fulham. If you really get your skates on and get your tickets by close of play on Tuesday, we’ll give you 70 baht off the 350 baht members cost! If you buy your ticket by 24th December we’ll still knock 30 baht off! – it helps with cash flow on the day, hence the discounts!

Gold Card Members Christmas Dinner For those of you with other commitments on Christmas Day or for those of you who (like me), just can’t get enough Turkey over the Christmas period, we’ll be holding our second, Gold Card Members Christmas Dinner on Thursday 22nd December. For a paltry (poultry?) 290 Baht you’ll get

A Welcome Glass of Sherry

A Gin or Vodka served with Tonic/Orange/Coke/Soda

Roast Turkey, Roast Potatoes, Mashed Potato, Carrots, Broccoli & Mangetout

Served with Sage & Onion Stuffing, Turkey Gravy and Cranberry Sauce

Christmas Pudding and Rum Sauce

There are no tickets for this, just turn up on Thursday! (although you can reserve a table in advance for a 100 baht deposit)

This special package is only available to Gold Card Members and up to two guests per member. So why not make up a party and join us. We’re hoping the local Baptist Church will be coming Carol Singing at some point during the evening and there’ll be all the usual frolics and Christmas pop songs. You can of course, use your Gold Card to get a 10% discount on any other drinks you buy!
Christmas BBQ . Wednesday 28th December. Our special Christmas BBQ will contain many familiar items plus a few extras. The
250 baht price includes 2 large bottles of Leo, Cheers, Chang Classic or Archa, or a large Glass of house wine
New Years Eve If you manage to get through all the Christmas activities we have to offer, we’ve got one last night for you to enjoy.  We’ll have a buffet, Big Ben, Scottish music to go with the chimes and then a disco. The Buffet costs just 150 baht. There are no tickets, just turn up on the night!

We hope to see those of you who are in town, over the Festive Period, so do pop in if you’re in town

Best Wishes

                                                  December  2011

Dear Gold Card Member,

an interesting tale was told me over the bar a couple of weeks ago by Chiang Mai’s master butcher ‘Sausage Bob’. Bob was watching a movie on True Visions called The Butterfly Effect’ This, Bob assures me was a mainstream channel not one of the  ‘adult’ variety. Anyway this movie contained scenes of total nudity which were not it seems cut in anyway by the Thai censors, but when a guy lit up a cigarette it was pixelled out!! wonderful, it could only happen in the Land of Smiles!!
The late arrival of this newsletter in your inbox is a result of the Olde Bell Management Team
paying a visit to Tachilek for a visa run as well as an associated mini break. We stayed a night in Chiang Saen, where Billy had his first ever boat ride. The Thai long tailed boat ride was fast and furious enough to impress him and scare the wits out of his mother! The Lao market we visited to make our ‘three countries in a day’, contained enough reptiles in local whiskey bottles to keep animal conservationists at work for days! The following night was spent atop Doi Wawee, in a very pleasant resort with a good quality Chinese restaurant attached. The village of Wawee itself was a fascinating mix of races and religions – There were Thai and Chinese Buddhist temples, Catholic and Baptist Christian Churches, and as we left, the Muezzin was cranking up for the afternoon call to prayer. The windy main street could have been in Tibet or Lijiang rather than Thailand. All of this was enjoyed at night time temperatures around 14C. A Highly recommended trip from Chiang Mai!
At the moment we are in that quiet lull period before Christmas and that means special offers
for our regulars! We’ve got a page of vouchers for you to download and print. If you manage to use them all you could
save 565 baht! In addition if you come along tomorrow (Saturday 10th December) We’ve got a BBQ which will cost the
general public 120 baht., we’d like to offer it to you for the reduced price of 70 baht! Just show your Gold Card. Cheers!

Anyway, on to our happenings this month:

Saturday 10th December and Sunday 11th December

There’s a good football programme this weekend with Man Utd trying to get back to winning ways against Wolves and
Arsenal taking on Everton both at 10pm. On Sunday there’s Sunderland v Blackburn at 8.30pm. and Stoke C. v Tottenham at 11pm. In addition there are a couple fo interesting Heineken Cup matches with Bath v Leinster at 7.45pm and Clermont Auverne v Leicester Tigers at 10pm. As mentioned above the BBQ costs just 70 baht tomorrow and you
could use one of your vouchers to reduce the price of a Sunday Lunch. Anyway, we hope to see  many of you over the weekend

Darts Night Don’t forget that next Wednesday 14th December, we will be holding our third  Olde Bell v British Legion Darts Night. There’ll be free beer and sandwiches. anyway it’s all a bit of fun so if you’d like to take part, just come along. A reminder that If anyone would like to co-ordinate the evening there’s a beer and food package available, do let us know  if you’re interested!

Royal British Legion Christmas Dinner There are only 10 tickets left for the RBL’s Christmas Dinner. at a 250 baht price tag, the evening is being heavily subsidised by the Legion. The subsidy is one of the benefits of membership so if you haven’t yet joined the RBL, perhaps you would like to consider doing so!

who prefer to eat your Christmas Dinner on Christmas Eve, we also have tickets available for that sitting. A reminder

of town until The Big Day!

New Years Eve If you manage to get through all the Christmas activities we have to offer, we’ve got one last night
for you to enjoy: The last night of the year. The Thais might be mystified by Christmas, but by New Year they’ve caught
up with the Party Spirit! We’ll have a buffet, Big Ben, Scottish music to go with the chimes and then a disco. The Buffet
